Rupee gains 10 paise against US dollar in early trade

  The Indian rupee appreciated by 10 paise to Rs. 52.86 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Monday, supported by gains posted by the euro and other currencies against the American dollar overseas and a better opening in the domestic stock market.

Dealers said dollar weakness against the euro and other currencies overseas and gains recorded on the domestic bourses in early trade today supported the rupee sentiment.

The rupee had closed 24 paise lower at Rs. 52.96/97 per US dollar in the previous session on Friday on sustained demand for the US currency from importers and some banks amid weakness in the equity market.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rose by 90.11 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 15,828.81 in opening trade today.

Rupee down by 11 paise against US dollar

The rupee fell by 11 paise to Rs 52.97 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Tuesday amid increased demand for the American currency from importers and strengthening of the dollar against the euro overseas.

However, a higher opening in the equity market

capped the rupee losses.

Dealers said apart from dollar gains against the euro -- which dipped to a 11-month low amid a debt crisis in the common currency region -- increased demand for the dollar from importers mainly weighed on the rupee sentiment.

However, a higher opening in the equity market limited the losses.

The rupee had lost 16 paise to close at Rs 52.86/87 against the US dollar in the previous session due to fresh demand for the American currency from importers amid weak stock markets.

The BSE benchmark Sensex recovered by 68.79 points, or 0.44%, to 15,448.13 in opening trade on Tuesday.

Rajan said Jigna incited him against Dey: Witness

The statement of a witness in the chargesheet of the J Dey murder case, is one of the “key” evidences against journalist Jigna Vora, who allegedly instigated underworld don Chhota Rajan to kill the veteran reporter, a crime branch officer said.

 This statement mentioned in

the 3,055-page chargesheet is a "pivotal and key" testimonial evidence, which states that Rajan had ordered the murder of Dey and that Vora instigated the killing, the official told Press Trust of India.

The witness, who is a kin of arrested accused Vinod Asrani, had spoken to Rajan after the murder, when the latter had told the former that he regretted killing Dey, the officer said.

“The witness told us that Rajan called him and stated that he was regretting the murder of Dey and claimed that Jigna had incited him. The witness' statement was recorded under under section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate. His statement is attached with the chargesheet,” he said.

Nearly six months after the murder of Jyotirmoy Dey, the Mumbai police on Saturday filed the chargesheet against 12 accused, including fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan, in the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court.

The chargesheet did not name the recently-arrested accused Vora, deputy bureau chief of The Asian Age. A supplementary chargesheet elaborating Vora's role in the crime will be filed later, police said.

Dey, a journalist at Mid Day, was shot in suburban Powai on June 11 by assailants, who followed him on motorcycles at the behest of Rajan, police said. Police also said Rajan gave R5 lakh to the accused for killing the journalist. Rajan had apparently ordered Dey’s killing as the latter had written articles against him.

Bedi says can deal with cheating case against her

Following a city court’s order, the Delhi Police crime branch has filed an FIR against her under various sections of the IPC. The case was given to the Special Operation Squad unit of the crime branch. They are scanning the content of complaint, after which Bedi will be called for questioning. Since it is a non-bailable offence, she can be arrested during questioning and sent to the Tihar Jail.

The court, on Saturday, had ordered the police to register a case against the former IPS officer on a complaint filed by Delhi-based lawyer Devinder Singh Chauhan. The police have also named Bedi’s NGOs in the FIR for misappropriation of funds, meant to impart free computer training to children of paramilitary forces.

The Delhi Police had, however, opposed the registration of FIR. They claimed the lawyer had no ground and if there was misappropriation of funds, the donors, who provided money to Bedi’s NGOs, India Vision Foundation and Navjyoti Foundation, should have moved the complaint.

Chauhan alleged that Bedi received more than Rs 50 lakh donation from Microsoft for imparting free computer training to kids and families of personnel of BSF, CISF, ITBP, CRPF and other state police organisations under the banner of India Vision Foundation.

Police said Chauhan has alleged Bedi got permission of four community centres by misleading an undertaking that she will not charge from students out of these courses, but she is charging R15,000 per student. Chauhan added that instead of imparting free training or distributing free computers, Bedi along with some people cheated Vedanta Foundation and planned to cheat the kids of policemen.

Lokayukta police files FIR against Yeddy, Somanna

Spelling fresh trouble for former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, Lokayukta police on Saturday filed an FIR against him, Housing Minister V Somanna and two others, alleging irregularities in denotification of land."An FIR has been filed against Yeddyurappa and Somanna, mainly under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and also for misappropriation, breach of criminal trust and forging documents," City Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Shivashankar said.

The FIR was filed following Lokayukta court Judge NK Sudhindra Rao's directve to Lokayukta SP (Bangalore Urban) to conduct a probe under relevant sections of the CrPC and submit his report on December 26.

The complainant, Ravi Krishnareddy, a software engineer, alleged Yeddyurappa denotified 22 guntas (one gunta is about 1086 square feet) of land in Nagadevanahalli here in 2009 to an education trust owned by Somanna's wife in violation of rules.

The land had already been acquired by Bangalore Development Authority in 1998, he submitted, adding a building constructed by the trust on it is "illegal" as it had not been accorded permission.

Shailaja and Lingaraju, the erstwhile land owner, are the two other persons named in the complaint.

Yeddyurappa, who has been facing five complaints, has secured bail in two, paving the way for his release from jail on Nov 8 after a 25 day long stay.
